1942 NORTHOLT AGAIN

S/Ldr Sawicz commanded the 315 from October 1942 till April 1943. During this time the unit distinguished itself escorting US bombers. As its CO and later as the Northolt Wing Commander, his role was appreciated by USAAF brass, and he was awarded American DFC. On this picture, W/Cdr Sawicz is seen soon after receiving the award in July 1943.

Armourers replace a 20 mm Hispano cannon. This Spitfire V carried a drum loaded cannon, which later was replaced with belt-fed version. This formidable weapon required a lot of servicing to be reliable.
